Skating side by side is a lovely way to talk without staring at each other across a table. It also gives nervous first daters something to laugh about. Here is how to make it work.
Skate, then warm up
Food and drink vendors, change rooms and rest areas sit on or near the ice. Rentals and skate sharpening are available too. Agree on a turnaround point so neither of you gets too cold.

Time it with Winterlude
Winterlude 2027 runs from 29 January to 15 February across three weekends in Ottawa and Gatineau. Most activities are free, from ice sculptures to the Snowflake Kingdom snow playground. Go early on weekends to avoid the biggest crowds.

Plan B if the ice is closed
The Skateway depends on the weather and some winters it barely opens. Have an indoor backup, like Thursday evening at the Museum of History, when entry is free from 5 to 7pm.

Questions
Is the Skateway free?
Yes. Skating is free. Rentals and food cost extra.
What if one of us cannot skate well?
Go slowly and hold hands if you both want to. There is also a packed snow walking lane beside parts of the Skateway once enough snow has built up.
When does the Skateway open?
It depends on the ice. It usually runs from January to early March, and the NCC posts updates on its website and social channels.
